What to do in Naxos
During my island-hopping adventure, I spent two full days in Naxos and it was pure magic! From lazy beach days to exploring charming towns, Naxos swept us off our feet. If you're looking for the perfect island to add to your Greece itinerary, let me show you all the reasons why Naxos should be on your list!
1. Soak Up the Sun at Naxos’ Dreamy Beaches
Naxos is all about golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re a sunbather, swimmer, or just love a good beach stroll, you’ll find the perfect spot to relax. Here are my top beach picks:
Agios Prokopios Beach: It’s one of the most popular beaches, with cute tavernas nearby. Perfect for a swim or lazy afternoon lounging!
Plaka Beach: If you’re more into a chill vibe, Plaka is your beach! It’s long, a little quieter, and has those dreamy dunes that feel super secluded.
Agia Anna Beach: With crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere.
2. Wander Through the Old Town (Chora)
Oh my goodness, walking through Naxos Town (Chora) is like stepping into a fairy tale! Narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and blooming flowers at every turn. It’s the perfect spot for a slow morning stroll or an evening wander as the sun sets.
Here’s what you need to know:
Don’t miss the Kastro (Castle): Wander up the hill through winding lanes and you’ll find yourself at the Kastro, an ancient Venetian castle with stunning views over the town and port.
Cute cafés and boutiques: Pop into some adorable shops selling local crafts and souvenirs, or sip an iced coffee at a café tucked in the labyrinth of streets. You never know what hidden gems you’ll find! I am a coffee lover and Naxos had some of the best ice coffees from my trip travelling Greece!
3. The Temple of Apollo – A Sunset Must-See
The iconic Temple of Apollo! It’s one of those spots you can’t miss, especially at sunset when the sky turns shades of pink and gold. The town is quite small and you can spot the site the moment you step out of your ferry.
Where to find it: The temple is located right at the entrance of the port on a small islet. You can walk there from town across a causeway (super easy to find!). It’s perfect for a sunset stroll and a dreamy photo op.
4. Getting Around Naxos
Okay, so you’re ready to explore, but how do you get around this gorgeous island? Good news – Naxos has a fantastic and budget-friendly transit system! Here’s the lowdown:
Buses: There’s a reliable bus service that connects Naxos Town with all the major beaches and villages. Buses are frequent and super affordable (around €2-€3 per trip). I didn’t rent my car during my time in Naxos but the bus system was very easy to use and convenient! It got us to all the beaches we wanted to explore without having to book a tour.
Renting a Scooter/Car: If you’re feeling adventurous, renting a scooter or car is a fab option for exploring off-the-beaten-path spots. Scooters start around €15 per day, and a small car might cost you €30-€40 per day.
Walking: If you’re sticking around town, walking is the best way to soak in the atmosphere. There are so many adorable alleyways and secret corners to discover.
5. Is Naxos Budget-Friendly?
Absolutely! Here’s a quick breakdown of typical costs to help you plan:
Accommodations: You can find a cozy room for around €50-€100 per night in town or by the beach. If you’re feeling fancy, higher-end options can start from €120+.
Food: Expect to pay around €10-€15 for a delicious meal at a taverna, with fresh seafood and local dishes like moussaka or grilled octopus. Yum! For budget eats, grab a souvlaki or gyro for under €5.
Activities: Exploring the town and beaches is free (yay!), and entry to museums or historical sites like the Temple of Apollo is often either free or just a few euros.
Whether you’re lounging on one of Naxos’ gorgeous beaches, getting lost in the town’s cobbled streets, or catching that perfect sunset at the Temple of Apollo, Naxos is sure to steal your heart.
